About this Item

Small 4to. Cream cloth with gilt lettering. 78pp. Frontispiece, decorations. Very good. Spine slightly age toned; issued without dust jacket, but lacking slipcase. First edition, an unspecified limited edition that preceded the Harper & Brothers first trade edition -- this copy with nice autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Ralph G. Newman (1911-98), founder of Chicago's famed Abraham Lincoln Book Shop and this book's publisher. 1p, 5½" X 8½", Chicago, IL, 23 April 1962. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln scholar). Near fine. On "Abraham Lincoln Book Shop" letterhead, Newman informs Gates that "The Chicago Civil War Round Table is interested in having a flag made, similar to the one which the New York group uses. Can you tell me by whom it was made?" Signed simply "Ralph" in black ink. Front pastedown bears Newman's outstanding Lincoln-theme custom-engraved Bernardt Wall bookplate. Book designed and printed by Norman W. Forgue of Chicago's notable Black Cat Press. Bookseller Inventory # 41096
