Description:

First Edition of The Biglow PapersIn a Fine Onlaid Binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe[SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE, binders]. [LOWELL, James Russell]. Meliboeus-Hipponax. The Biglow Papers, Edited, with an Introduction, Notes, Glossary, and Copious Index, by Homer Wilbur? Cambridge [Mass]: George Nichols, 1848. First edition. Small octavo (7 1/8 x 4 1/2 inches; 180 x 113 mm.). 12, xxxii, 163, [1, blank] pp. Elaborately bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe ca. 1915, stamp-signed in gilt on lower rear turn-in. Full olive green morocco, covers richly decorated with four plain and dotted borders enclosing a central panel with rows of alternating dots and flowers with highly intricate gilt floral sprays at corners. In the center an onlaid red morocco and richly gilt decorated mandorla with leafy fronds accented with onlaid green morocco 'berries'. Spine with five raised bands, elaborately decorated in a gilt strapwork design and lettered in gilt in compartments. Gilt board edges, quadruple gilt ruled turn-ins, gray liners and end-leaves, top edge gilt. Spine very slightly and evenly sunned, very slight, almost imperceptible crack to upper joint, otherwise near fine. With the engraved bookplate of renowned bibliophile Roderick Terry (1849-1933) on front paste-down."There is more to be said for The Biglow Papers. Lowell's motivation for writing the pieces was commendable; he wrote them to attack the Mexican War, which he abhorred for dividing American society and occasioning the spread of slavery to conquered territory. And Lowell created two other effective characters in the work to play off against Biglow's simple honesty, one Birdofredum Sawin, who serves Lowell's purpose by ineffectively opposing Biglow, and the Reverend Homer Wilbur, a silly pendant, who, with Sawin, serves as a foil to underscore Biglow's down-home virtue" (Shuchard, American Poetry, p. 89).James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) was an American Romantic poet, critic, editor, and diplomat. He is associated with the Fireside Poets, a group of New England writers who were among the first American poets who rivaled the popularity of British poets. These poets usually used conventional forms and meters in their poetry, making them suitable for families entertaining at their fireside. Lowell graduated from Harvard College in 1838, despite his reputation as a troublemaker, and went on to earn a law degree from Harvard Law School. He published his first collection of poetry in 1841 and married Maria White in 1844. He and his wife had several children, though only one survived past childhood. The couple soon became involved in the movement to abolish slavery, with Lowell using poetry to express his anti-slavery views and taking a job in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the editor of an abolitionist newspaper. After moving back to Cambridge, Lowell was one of the founders of a journal called The Pioneer, which lasted only three issues. He gained notoriety in 1848 with the publication of A Fable for Critics, a book-length poem satirizing contemporary critics and poets. The same year, he published The Biglow Papers, which increased his fame. He went on to publish several other poetry collections and essay collections throughout his literary career.BAL, 13068; Grolier, 100 American Books printed before 1900 #57. Bookseller Inventory #
