About this Item

64 pages; appendix; brown cloth binding (6 x 9 1/2 inch) with gilt title on the cover and spine. Slight fading to the spine, internally fine with no marks. Gilt edging to the pages. Former owner's bookplate on the inside cover "Ex Libris, B. Olney Hough". Loring's account based on William Sturgis's (1782-1864) writings of the principal events in his life. Sturgis west to sea at age sixteen to the Northwest Coast, learning the languages along the coast, mainly the 'Chinook Jargon' and by nineteen was captain of his own ship working the 'China trade' between Boston, the Northwest Coast and Canton. Known for being scrupulously honest and able to handle any situation or problem that might arise he quickly made a fortune and was a partner in Sturgis and Brandt which controlled the hide and tallow trade in California during the 1820s and 1830s. The book contains extracts from his lectures relating to the Northwest Coast trade. The appendix contains testimonials on Stugis's death. Lada-Mocarski - BIBLIOGRAPHY OF BOOK ON ALASKA (1969) #155 "Altogether, this slight memoir is replete with authoritative and interesting remarks of an intelligent and impartial observer of the early New England trade on the northwest coast." A very good clean copy, unusual in this condition. Bookseller Inventory # 11760
