Book Description Cambridge Library Collection, United Kingdom, 2013. Paperback. Condition: New. Reissue. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.John Conolly (1794-1866) was a physician and alienist (psychiatrist) who worked with the mentally ill at the Hanwell County Asylum in Middlesex, where he introduced the principle of non-restraint. This action was at first controversial and met with strong opposition, but it served to further the cause of humane treatment, securing Conolly s reputation. Book Description John Murray, London, 1869. Cloth. Condition: Good +. First Edition. xxii, 298, 32 p. 20 cm. Mounted frontispiece portrait of Conolly. Blue cloth hardcover with blank impressing. Faded spine. Corners slightly worn. Small labels on pastedowns. A few pages uncut. Red underlining on pp. 38 and 186 has affected surrounding pages. Foxing on last page. John Conolly (1794–1866) was a physician and psychiatrist who treated the mentally ill at the Hanwell County Asylum where he introduced the principle of non-restraint. This principle had already been put into practice in two small English asylums—William Tuke's York Retreat and the Lincoln Asylum—but it was due to Conolly's courage in sweeping away all mechanical restraint in the large metropolitan-area asylum that non-restraint became accepted practice throughout Britain. This biography was the last major work of Sir James Clark (1788–1870), a supporter of Conolly's enlightened methods. Clark himself had enjoyed a distinguished medical career, being physician to Queen Victoria. Seller Inventory # 115543
