About this Item

[LUCAS, Daniel Bedinger]. Memoir of John Yates Beall: His Life; Trial; Correspondence; Diary; and Private Manuscript Found among His Papers, Including His Own Account of the Raid on Lake Erie. Montreal: Printed by John Lovell, 1865. 1st ed. vii,297pp. Portrait frontis., portraits. Later 3/4-calf and marbled boards, gilt-decorated raised spine bands, black morocco spine label, marbled endpapers, T.e.g., original printed wrappers bound in. Wrappers professionally repaired, else a very good or better copy. HOWES L-546. Dornbusch II, 2597. "The special pleadings of an erratic Confederate irregular"--Nevins I, p.238. Beall and his men consisted a group of Confederate navy irregulars operating in the Chesapeake Bay area much as Mosby operated in the Valley. Beall and his men made their way to Canada to mount a raid in Lake Erie to free Confederate prisoners held on Johnson's Island. They were unsuccessful, but able to seize and sink several boats in the lake. Beall was captured by Union authorities and accused of "acting in the two fold capacity of a spy and guerilla." After his capture, President Davis issued a proclamation stating that the Confederate government assumed "the responsibility of answering for the acts and conduct of its officer engaged in said expedition." The U.S. military commission in the trial proceedings found Beall guilty, and he was hanged on 24 February 1865. Bookseller Inventory # 67892
