Description:

Bowditch, Nathaniel (1773-1838). Memoir of Nathaniel Bowditch. By his son, Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch [1805-61]. 172pp. 2 plates, including frontispiece. Boston: Charles C. Little and James Brown, 1840. Original cloth, gilt-lettered label on front cover, moderate wear, faded strip along foot of front cover. Light finger-soiling, date stamp on verso title but very good. Library bookplate and stamps. First Separate Edition, the second overall, having first been published in Volume IV of the elder Bowditch's translation of Laplace's Mécanique celeste (1839). "The best biography of Bowditch remains the one prepared by his son . . . published in Volume IV of the Mécanique celeste and separately in subsequent editions. Despite its understandable filiopietism and a tendency to ramble, the work does convey much information and shows signs of honest attempts to gather information by consulting the Bowditch papers and old friends" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). . Nat DesMarais Rare Books, ABAA
(Portland, OR, U.S.A.)

Book Description First separate edition (it was originally part of the final volume of Bowditch's famous translation of Mecanique Celeste). Inscribed by Bowditch. Quarto (9 x 11 1/4 inches). 168 pp. including two full pages etched portraits of Bowditch and his wife Mary (the dedicatee). Publisher's quarter light brown linen over printed boards. Linen is pulling away but the mull is still very strong, two minor and old water dots to front. Overall, a very good copy indeed.Inscribed by Nathaniel I. Bowditch at the end of the following final paragraph of the Preface which reads: "Of the Mécanique Céleste only five hundred copies have been printed, the greater part of which will probably remain unsold for several years, as, from the nature of its subject, it must necessarily find but few readers, besides that it is contained in four large and expensive quarto volumes. The author has, therefore, caused to be printed a small extra edition of the Memoir, chiefly with the view of presenting it to such individuals as he believed would feel an interest in the account which he has given of his father life and character." After this N. I Bowditch has written in pen ' "Mrs. Morris, one of his mother's intimate friends, with the regards of the Author, Boston, July 31, 1939.". Seller Inventory # 74787
