Pp. xxxii, 20, 568, [2], six folding engraved plates. Original full leather, gilt-lettered red morocco spine label, 4to. This is the prestigious first volume of the Memoirs of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. It contains much scientific literature on lightning and electricity by Joseph Willard, Arthur Lee, and James Bowdoin, as well as articles by Williams on earthquakes in New England, by Benjamin Lincoln on the shells and geology of York River in Virginia; by Joseph Green leaf on Indian corn, by Manasseh Cutler describing many new species of North American plants, by the botanist Benjamin Lincoln on fruit trees, and numerous other technical articles on medical and astronomical observations. Signature of Charles Chaffin and one other intelligible signature from Holden, Massachusetts, dated 1824 on the front endpaper. The plates show some offsetting and browning, the spine leather is a bit cracked, the text is generally clean with only occasional foxing, a good to very good copy. Bookseller Inventory # 2637
