About this Item

"The author of this little narrative is among the few surviving actors in a Revolution which gave freedom and prosperity to the great republic of North America. He sees his contemporaries rapidly failing around him, and being beneath the weight of years and early sufferings. He is constrained to feel that the hour when he shall 'go the way of all the earth,' cannot be far distant. Under such circumstances he is impressed with the idea that he still owes a duty to that Being who has protected him 'all his life long,' to his country and to his children. He has exibited the merciful interpositions of Providence amidst distresses, dangers and death, with the hope that others may be led to place their trust in God.He has given to his countreymen a 'plain, unvarnished tale' of ther sufferings of those, who in the war of our independence, sustained the cause of liberty in the 'tented field' or 'on the mountain wave'." About this title

Synopsis:

Those early years which others employ in acquiring wealth or knowledge, in the case of the author, passed away amidst the hardships of a sailors life or were lingered out in prison. With much diffidence he submits this work to the public. Candid men will not expect elegance of style from one who has been domed the advantageer of an education. ANDREW SHERBURNE. A ugustaj Jr. F. July 15, 1828.
