About this Item

x, 354 pages; frontportrait; bound in blue cloth with paper label on the spine, under mylar.Binding somewhat shaken. Kurutz - CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH # 145: "According to these vivid recollections, . Cole left his native town of Lodi, New York, on February 12, 1849, and headed for California with a party of seven men, following the California Trail. After a short stop in Salt Lake City, they followed the Humboldt River, crossed into California via Carson Pass, and arrived at Sutter's Fort on July 24. .Cole provides good depictions of the fort, the Sacramento Embarcadero and his search for gold at Sutter's Mill, Coloma, Greenwood, Georgetown and Mokelumne Hill. Cole left the mines in the spring of 1850 and headed for San Francisco, where he began to practice law. After a fire in that city he returned to Sacramento and set up his legal practice. The future senator's recollections also tell of the Squatters Riots, lynching in Amador County and his remarkable efforts to protect the freedom of a former slave named Andy." Cole was a United State Congressman during the Civil War, a friend of Abraham Lincoln, and a United States Senator from California for a term after the Civil War. Bookseller Inventory # 8705
