About this Item

128 p.: frontispiece portrait; 14 cm. Brown cloth spine with green printed spine label. Marbled paper over boards. The life of a free black woman of Rhode Island whose property had been illegally seized and sold when she was ill, presented by Frances Harriet Whipple Green [later McDougall] (1805-1878), a Rhode Island author and reformer. Some of Eldridge’s story probably was romanticized by Green, who sought to help Eldridge regain her property (apparently successfully). Nevertheless, this is a rare depiction of the life of a free black woman in the United States prior to the Civil War, as well as an important statement of the value of a black woman's work at a time when the labor of women, black and white, was not valued. In Very Good Condition: tail of spine just starting to fray; paper over boards rubbed; corners rubbed through; old faint dampstaining of first few leaves; otherwise clean and tight; spine label is intact. The scarce 1841 edition. Bookseller Inventory # 000730
