About this Item

248pp, binding copy without covers, half-title dust-soiled, occasional foxing noted at final few pages, text otherwise clean and bright, edges untrimmed, text block tight. An account of an Englishman who was transported to the colony of Australia three times between 1801 and 1829 for criminal behavior. The book was written by Vaux during his confinement at Newcastle. It is generally held to be amongst the best early accounts of Sydney, and also the first full-length autobiography written in Australia. It was reprinted with a variant title by Hunt and Clarke, London, 1827, and also Whittaker, Treacher, and Arnot, London, 1829 and 1830. A modern reprint was issued by William Heinemann, London, 1964. The present item is volume I of the rare first edition. See Ferguson, Bibliography of Australia, Volume I, #1305, and Spence, A Bibliography of Selected Early Books and Pamphlets Relating to Australia, 1610-1880, page 77. Bookseller Inventory # 018446
