Engraved frontispiece portrait of Grimaldi.Half-forgotten Books Series. Eckel 152-55. Cohn 237, 238 (for Bentley's editions). Grimaldi, (1779-1837) was England's greatest clown. Dickens editing of Grimaldi's memoirs republished in a typically fragile turn of the 20th century volume. Illustrations especially well done. Extra notes added by Dickens self-appointed friend, Percy Fitzgerald. Eckel's comments on the limited participation of Dickens in writing this work are taken by many to be authoritative. Grimaldi initially sketched it out and gave it to Wilks, who worked it up before selling it to Bentley. The latter hired Dickens to polish it. Besides doing some editing, Dickens wrote the introductory and, possibly, the final chapter. The "Memoirs" was first published in 1838 with Cruikshank illustrations. Ex libris. with bookplate on front pastedown, a modest library number on p. iii and a removed pocket from rear pastedown. Spine taped externally and hinges taped internally. Spine tape deteriorating, especially at ends. Corners and edges worn. Text mildly shaken but clean and unfoxed. Overall, Good. Bookseller Inventory # 9844
