Book Description Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life, Writings, and Correspondence of Sir William Jones In presenting the public with an account of the Life of Sir William Jones, I feel a particular anxiety, to guard against the charge of presumption for an undertaking, which may be thought to require a more than ordinary share of learning and abilities. I hope therefore, to have credit for a declaration, that nothing but the earnest solicitation of Lady Jones, who knew my affection for her Husband when living, and my unabated regard for his memory, and who conceived that these qualifications might supply the deficiency of more essential talents, could have prevailed upon me, to enter upon a literally career, so foreign to the habits of a life, of which more than fifty years are now elapsed. Book Description J. Hatchard, London, 1815. Full Calf. Book Condition: Fair. Sixth Edition. 636 pages. Worn full calfskin with gold tooled edges and spine, head of spine chipped, marbled end papers and text edges, front cover, front free end paper and title page detached. Professionally boxed in buckram-covered boards for protection. Slight stain and age marks to last 3 pages, contents clean with very occasional age mark. Sir William Jones (1746-1794) was an English philologist and student of ancient India, particularly known for his proposition of the existence of a relationship among Indo-European languages. In 1783 he traveled to Calcutta and became entranced by Indian culture, an as-yet untouched field in European scholarship, and in 1784 he founded the Asiatick Society. Over the next ten years he produced a flood of works on India, launching the modern study of the subcontinent in virtually every social science. Of all his discoveries, Jones is best known today for making and propagating the observation that Sanskrit bore a certain resemblance to classical Greek and Latin. In 'The Sanscrit Language' he suggested that all three languages had a common root. 8.5 by 5.25 inches. Bookseller Inventory # 4213
