Warren from an original painting by Diego Velasquez de Silva of a portrait of Sir Philip Sidney. The life and poems of Sir Philip Sidney during the golden reign of Queen Elizabeth. Spine split but still bound, paper rubbed off boards, leather at foredges rubbed off. Some creasing to endpapers with last 150 pages lightly water stained at lower right corner, minor foxing to interior pages. Binding in fair, interior in overall good+ condition. Second edition. 400pp. Quarto [29 cm] 1/2 parchment vellum with recent and original paper over boards. Top edge trimmed; other edges deckled. Fair condition only. Large areas of the underlying boards are exposed on the covers. The majority of the text block is completely detached from the covers (the very preliminary pages are still attached). A large sheet of paper with a gift inscription from 1897, has been mounted to the front pastedown and half title page. Sir Philip Sidney, Elizabethan courtier, statesman, soldier, and poet, wrote the heroic prose romance, the Arcadia. Bookseller Inventory # 40315
