About this Item

Stereotype edition, newly corrected and revised; complete in one volume. Half maroon cloth over marbled boards, spine label stamped in gilt. Well rubbed about the spine and edges, Frontis and one internal plate has been blobbed with watercolors. Essentially a working copy only. Stephen Burroughs was an adventurer born in New Hampshire in 1765. He ran away at 14 to join the army at the end of the Revolutionary War but deserted and later entered Dartmouth College for a brief time. He impersonated a Protestant minister but was soon exposed as a fake and arrested for passing counterfeit money in Springfield, Mass. After several unsuccessful escape attempts, he set fire to the jail. The remainder of his career was dotted with arrests and subsequent escapes and he eventually went to Canada as the head of a gang of counterfeiters. He later repented, became a Catholic, and became an educator. His "Memoirs" were first published in 1811. Bookseller Inventory # E105
