BROWN, ISAAC V. Memoirs of the Rev. Robert Finley, D.D. Late Pastor of the Presbyterian Congregation at Basking Ridge New-Jersey, and President of Franklin College, Located at Athens . Georgia. With Brief Sketches of some of his Cotemporaries [sic], and Numerous Notes. New Brunswick: W. Myer for Terhune & Letson, 1819. 8vo. 370 p. incl. silhouette frontis. With the contents leaf but without the copyright notice and errata slip which were tipped into some copies. Contemporary sheep (spine ends chipped, some wear, but tight). Considerably foxed. Inscribed: "Mrs. Ruth Woodard her book, Presented to her by a friend. Baskingride Decr. 16 18[cropped]." On the rear blanks are three pages of early-nineteenth-century Sanders family birth and death records. First edition, first issue. Finley was the prime mover in the establishment of the American Colonization Society. He also kept a school for twenty years in Basking Ridge. Shortly before his death he became president of the University of Georgia. Isaac Van Arsdale Brown was minister of the Presbyterian church in Lawrenceville and founder of what is today the Lawrenceville School. Brown's book was reissued later in 1819 in duodecimo format.
