About this Item

Hardcover, decoritively blindstamped brown cloth with upper cover boldly lettered in gold. 79pp. Illustrated with frontispiece on heavy card stock with tissue guard present. First edition. A slim, tall volume containing some of the eulogies delivered upon the death of Ambrose E. Burnside. Burnside was Rhode Island governor and a U.S. senator, a railroad executive, the first president of the National Rifle Association, and a Civil War Union Army general. He wore his facial hair in a very distinctive style, which is now referred to as sideburns, inspired by his last name. After being defeated in the Battle of Fredericksburg and Battle of the Crater, Burnside soon resigned from his position in 1865. He died on January 23rd, 1882. Binding is tight, all pages are firmly attached and covers and text are clean. . The covers and spine show only incidental rubbing, with some fraying to the corners and spine ends. A remarkably well preserved copy of a fragile book of interest to both Civil War collectors and collectors of American political personalities. A very good+ copy. Bookseller Inventory # 005359
