Paper covered boards (poor looking marble style) with black leather bindings. vii, 10-204, 191; v, 7-192,164 pp. With a fold out ground plan of Longwood at the front of volume 1, and a fold out map of the Campaigns of Italy, as well as a frontis illustration of Napoleon's birthplace at the front of volume 2. Emmanuel Augustin Dieudonne Joseph, or Comte De Las Cases, was a noted French writer and atlas maker, who accompanied Napoleon in his exile at St. Helena. During this time he took notes of the conversations and day to day life of Napoleon in exile, publishing them upon his eventual return from the island. While a popular account, portions of it were probably exaggerated or concocted. (see Wikipedia). This account includes the trip to St. Helena, the observations and opinions of Napoleon on the politics of Europe, conjecture that Napoleon may have invaded America, and allegations of mistreatment of Napoleon by his imprisoners. FAIR/GOOD condition, ex-library. Library bookplates present at the front of each volume. Minor library markings in pencil in the interior. Moderate scuffing to the covers and extremities, with heavy scuffing along the leather hinges and spine. Moderate fading along the extremities. Minor soiling. Leather worn along the spine, cracking and chipping in several places, and frayed and pulled at the head and tail. Volume 1 MISSING the upper 1 inch of the backstrip, with a tiny flap remaining. Interior hinges cracked. First blank endpaper of volume 1 DETACHED and laid in. Text blocks otherwise solid. Very light scattered soiling and foxing in volume 1. The fold out plan has a 1 ½ inch tear along a lower fold crease and a small ½ inch hole near the tear. Three pages in volume one with pencil marginalia along the upper edge. Some misfolding along the edges of the map in volume 2. Very light scattered soiling and foxing. Bookseller Inventory #
