About this Item

x, 545, 75pp, illustrated with numerous portraits and 2 full-page steel-engraved portraits on heavy plate paper of Ebenezer G. D. Holden and Leonard H. Randall, each with facsimile signature, full old dark green tooled leather with beveled boards, gilt lettering at spine, spine chipped away at bottom third, leather moderately worn and scuffed, with minor stripping in one spot at front cover as noted in picture, extremities worn through, boards both detached, front flyleafs and frontispiece detached and crudely taped at spine edge, title page shows a long vertical strip of glue, apparently from tape, which is no longer present, text is generally clean. This is the very scarce first edition of the history of Michigan's Grand River Valley including the city of Grand Rapids and the counties of Kent and Ottawa, based on the author's interviews with early pioneers. It includes histories of the early settlements and settlers, Indian mythology, missions, schools and churches, lumber, trapping, a large section on the military with lists of Civil War officers and men who died in service, etc., etc. The book would be reprinted in 1984 by the Grand Rapids Historical Society.
