Description:

Small 4to. Burgundy cloth with gilt lettering. 141pp. Illustrations, map. Very good. Minor edgewear and some "flecking" to front board cloth. A tight and nice first edition of this tribute volume, with choice autograph addition: The front flyleaf is inscribed and signed large and bold: "Col. Americus Whedon / Compl's of / James Tanner / and / Col. Lewis R. Stegman / 2nd Ferb'y 1919." James R. "Corporal" Tanner (1844-1927) was a corporal with the 87th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment and saw action in a number of crucial battles before being wounded at the Second Battle of Bull Run, resulting in the amputation of both legs; made an Ordnance Department stenographer in Washington, his fame was assured on April 14, 1865, when he was ordered to the Petersen House across the street from Ford's Theatre to record accounts from eyewitnesses to Lincoln's assassination, and he was in the room at 7:22 the following morning when Lincoln died; he worked at the New York Customs House after the war, then as the innovative tax collector for the city of Brooklyn; in 1889 he had a brief tenure as Commissioner of Pensions, and later revamped an ailing American Red Cross; he was also a popular speaker and veterans' advocate for the G.A.R. Tanner was one of the main speakers at this ceremony, and the text of his oration appears in this volume along with his portrait. Stegman was chairman of the New York Monuments Commission and his letter "To the Legislature" appears among the front matter of this volume, as does the text of his opening address and his portrait. Americus Whedon (1840-1912) was a vice commander of the G.A.R. and an officer with the 82nd Indiana Infantry who survived imprisonment at the notoroious Andersonville Prison; he appears on page 20 in a list of officers "In Attendance at the Dedications." A wonderfully unique copy. Bookseller Inventory #
