Description:

Boston/New York. 1995. Houghton Mifflin. 1st American Edition. Very Good In Dustjacket. 338 pages. July 1995. hardcover. ISBN: 0395441145. inventory # 13555. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Where Bigfoot Walks is a dramatic narrative exploration not only of the phenomenon of Bigfoot but also of the nature of human belief, particularly the need to believe that something is out there beyond what we rationally know. Awarded a Guggenheim to investigate the legends of Sasquatch, Robert Pyle trekked into the wilderness of the Dark Divide, where he discovered a giant fossil footprint; searched out Indians who told him of an outcast tribe, the Seeahtlks, who had not fully evolved into humans; attended Sasquatch Daze in British Columbia, where he met scientists, hunters, and others—even a standup comic—who have devoted their lives to Bigfoot (call 1-800-BIGFOOT if you spot one) , and realized that ‘these guys don ‘t want to find Bigfoot—they want to be Bigfoot.’ A Washington State University professor told him, ‘I don’t believe in Bigfoot. I have certain knowledge that causes me to conclude.’ A Smithsonian scientist said that a hoax sufficient to explain the facts was even more unlikely than the existence of the animal itself. Even the Army Corps of Engineers, in an environmental atlas of Washington State, said Bigfoot’s existence was ‘not unlikely.’ The tabloid press provided corroborating evidence in reports such as ‘Bigfoot Baby Found in Watermelon: Has Elvis’s Sneer.’ As he explores the world of Sasquatch, ‘all along the way Pyle sings the glories of the land, its birds and butterflies and snails and stones’ (Kirkus Reviews). Where Bigfoot Walks is unlike any other book you’ve ever read about Sasquatch-or anything else. It may not make you believe in Bigfoot, but it will make you believe in Robert Pyle. Synopsis: Where Bigfoot Walks is concerned less with the existence of Bigfoot than with the nature of human belief, particularly the need to believe that something beyond what we rationally know is "out there." Awarded a Guggenheim fellowship to investigate the legends of Sasquatch, Bob Pyle trekked into the wilderness of the Dark Divide, where he discovered a giant fossil footprint; searched out Indians who told him of an outcast tribe whose members had not evolved fully into humans; attended Sasquatch Daze, where he met scientists, hunters, and crackpots who devote their lives to Bigfoot; and realized that "these guys don't want to find Bigfoot - they want to be Bigfoot." A Smithsonian scientist insisted that "the possibility of a hoax to explain all the facts is even more remote than that of the animal existing"; even the Army Corps of Engineers said Bigfoot's existence was "not unlikely." The tabloid press provided corroborating evidence in reports such as "Bigfoot Baby Found in Watermelon:

Review: A search for the Pacific Northwest's fabled Bigfoot provides a jumping-off point for nature writer Robert Michael Pyle's lyrical ruminations on wilderness, isolation, and the occasional triumphs of mystery over so-called progress. Pyle's well-researched stomping ground is Washington State's Dark Divide in the Cascade Mountains--this rugged country of loggers and recreationists has been the scene for many sightings of the elusive man-beast. Pyle's route alternates between desolate clear-cuts and majestic ancient forests, between the inroads of civilization and the dark recesses of the wild. But never does the author get too caught up in proving anything to himself or the reader; this search for Bigfoot has as much to do with locating the wild nature within each of us as it does with finding a legend.
