About this title

Synopsis:

"An American treasure...Edgerton s a mater of the old-fashioned American art of tale-spinning. His literary line goes back straight as an arrow to the likes of Sherwood Anderson and Mark Twain."

THE SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE

Join the folks in Summerlin, North Carolina, as they attend to the sad, crazy, but inevitable business of passing on--and passing down. For a whole pack of relatives is waiting to see who dies first. Will it be Glenn or Laura Bales? The order will determine which children from which marriage will get the land. And if tha tisn't enough intrigue, hell-raising black sheep Uncle Grove McCord has decided that Summerlin should be his final resting place--and he's about to arrive still very much alive....

From the Publisher:

My first introduction to Clyde Edgerton's work was a few years back at a reading he did for IN MEMORY OF JUNIOR -- and boy did he knock my socks off! I laughed so hard and was so charmed by his work that I became a devotee on the spot. His wacky characters, his unique cadence, and the clever whimsy of the story gave this title a permanent spot on my bookshelf.

I can't even recount how many times I've reread the passage when the aging Miss Laura takes out her agressions on the town folk by eating a box of Whitman's Sampler candy piece by piece. She names each piece of candy and then pops it in her mouth as if she's extinguishing the frustrating person's existence. Sounds odd, but the scene is so raucously funny that it brings tears to my eyes.
