About this Item

Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt lettering. x, 67pp. Very good. Though internally tight and quite nice, the spine and portions of front board are smoke darkened. A tight, decent first edition of the second verse collection of this poet (1898-1982) and 1950 National Book Award winner, considered a rising poetry star in the 1920s and '30s. Interestingly, this copy comes from the library of Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (b. 1930), son of Illinois governor and twice presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65). The governor's wife, noted socialite Ellen Borden Stevenson (1908-72), has filled pages 66-67 and the blank closing flyleaves and pastedown sheet with boldly pencilled drafts of poems -- apparently drafts of a poem titled "Sonnet to Spring." Also interesting is that the age toning of the book's spine and portions of the front board are likely smoking caused by a fire in the couples Libertyville home, which burned down shortly after being built in 1935, destroying many of their possessions and antiques (rebuilt 1938) -- this slim volume appears to be a survivor of that calamity.
