About this Item

ARTHUR, Chester A. Message from the President of the United States, Transmitting a Communication from the Secretary of War, Transmitting Plans and Estimates for the Erection of a Large Military Post at Fort Selden, New Mexico. 47th Congress, 1st Session, Senate. Ex. Doc. No. 125. [Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1882]. 1st ed. 8pp. 25 folding plans. Later plain wrappers. A very good copy. Fort Selden was established in 1865 in what is now Radium Springs, New Mexico. The first troops to occupy it were members of the 125th US Colored Infantry Regiment, black soldiers from Kentucky who had joined the US Army at the close of the Civil War. At the time of this plan, the post commander was Capt. Arthur MacArthur, Jr., father of Douglas MacArthur, who later wrote that it was at Fort Selden that he and his brother learned to ride and shoot. Fort Selden was closed in the 1890s due to consolidation of army posts during the Indian Wars. . Bookseller Inventory # 66511
