About this Item

Copyright 1956. First edition. Stated third printing dated November 1956. Pictorial cloth boards, and with battle map end papers. This book is tight, sound and square and appears unread. The jacket has short closed tears, and closed folds and crimps at the edges, some small chips at the spine ends, and flap tips, and an area where a previous price sticker was removed, but only the surface of the jacket in that area is missing, sounds worse than it shows. The jacket is now in a Brodart protective plastic sleeve. There are 124 illustrations and 18 maps in 342 pages. This book is special because of the author inscription on the half title page which reads as follows: "To Brig. General T. K. Brown- From one old cavalryman to another. With memories of the old days, and very best wishes. Edward J. Stackpole". During the Second World War Stackpole was an officer in the 28th Infantry Division, known as the "Keystone Division" in the US, and as the "Bloody Bucket Division" to the Germans. The 28th can trace its lineage back to 1747 when Benjamin Franklin formed his battalion of "Associators" in Philadelphia. As a Major General Stackpole commanded the division in 1946 and 1947, and he later started Stackpole Books, also in Harrisburg, which is still in business today. This book should be of special interest to Civil War readers, Pennsylvania citizens, and past and present members of th 28th Infantry Division. We ship in cardboard boxes, and guarantee satisfaction.
