Franz Kafka, n� � Prague le 3 juillet 1883 d'une famille juive, a fait ses �tudes au lyc�e allemand de Prague de 1893 � 1901, puis � l'Universit� allemande. En 1907 il entre dans une compagnie d'assurances. Son exp�rience professionnelle jouera un r�le capital dans la vision du monde social que son oeuvre refl�te avec la plus extr�me pr�cision. En 1912 il rencontre Felice Bauer, avec qui il se fiance deux fois et rompt d�finitivement en 1917. C'est l'ann�e o� sa tuberculose pulmonaire est diagnostiqu�e. En 1923, au cours de vacances au bord de la Baltique, il fait la connaissance de Dora Dymant et s'installe avec elle � Berlin. Atteint de laryngite tuberculeuse, il est transport�, apr�s deux s�jours dans des h�pitaux de Vienne, au sanatorium de Kierling, o� il meurt le 3 juin 1924.
