Synopsis: The Metamorphosis of Kaden Parsons is about a boy who is bullied at school following the loss of his mother and mid-year transfer to a new school. As a new single-parent, his dad must learn how best to help his son while fighting the guilt of not knowing. Using the amazing transformation of the Monarch butterfly as a metaphor, Kaden's journey reveals who he really is and launches his dad on a quest to become the father his son needs him to be.

The conversation starters at the end of the book help busy parents to personalize the major themes of the story--which include bullying and the power of standing up, love and loss, and single parenting--to their own family values and experiences.

From the Author: I was going to write a book and had decided to finally tell about an enchanting experience a relative had shared with me many decades ago involving the rescue of a Monarch butterfly. But I wanted the story to be more. I wanted it to help families deal with the challenges of life today.

The idea about the boy and the single dad raising him came to me as I remembered the time when I had visited my aunt and the doorbell rang late at night to reveal a father and his young son standing in the shadows. The dad apologized for the lateness of the hour and turning to his son said, "This is the teacher I have always told you about. Son, she changed my life."

So, I had the elements the story - it would be about a father and son and would tell what I had for many years called "the butterfly story". As I continued to work through it in my mind, another gut wrenching story of a young person who had taken his own life in order to escape the pain of bullying hit the news. I knew immediately that it was my calling to help families by writing about bullying and that the experiences the father told his son would be those shared by a wonderful teacher from his own childhood.

With the story and characters swirling around in my mind, I still had not begun writing when a friend called to share her grandson's experience at a local butterfly encounter. The thrill of Monarchs had inspired him to plant a butterfly garden, which led to his taking the caterpillars and chrysalises to school where he was transformed from a shy little boy to a naturalist! His name is Kaden.

I love the story that resulted and I am especially proud of the conversation starters at the end of the book because they help parents engage their young readers in meaningful conversations about the major themes of the book. Care was taken to avoid providing details such as the age or grade of the main character, exact details of what happened to the mother, and even a specific location or time frame in order to allow readers to identify with the characters from their own histories.

One of my favorite discussion questions is, "What does it mean to measure your worth through the eyes of strangers?" What a powerful opportunity for parents to help build self-esteem while also diminishing the value of peer opinions!

I hope readers will love the story as much as I do and invite them to post an Amazon review and to visit my website and my blog!
