One of the most important accounts of the early Mexican republic, called by Streeter a "classic book on Mexico." The plates illustrate the country, the natives and their customs. Includes a "General Index of Spanish Words." The maps depict the principle routes to the mining districts, and the country as a whole. Streeter notes that while the section on Texas is brief, it is one of the few reliable descriptions and accounts from the 1820s. "a vivid and acutely observed account of the country" (ODNB). Ward (1797-1860) entered the diplomatic service in 1816 as attaché in Sweden. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. xix, [1], 591, [1]; viii, 730. with half-titles. 2 folding engraved maps, 10 aquatints (1 hand-coloured, 4 double-page, 1 double-page & folding), 3 lithographed plates (1 folding), & 5 wood-engravings in the text. contemporary calf, gilt arms on covers, rebacked preserving spine labels (corners worn, some foxing to plates & adjacent leaves, calf at head of one spine wrinkled). First Edition. A first-hand account of political and social conditions in Mexico following the Mexican War of Independence from Spain. The author was British Chargé d’Affaires there from 1825 to 1827. His account contains considerable detail respecting mining operations in the country. The handsome aquatints and lithographs are after drawings by Mrs. Ward.
