"a vivid and acutely observed account of the country" (ODNB). Ward (1797-1860) entered the diplomatic service in 1816 as attaché in Sweden. First Edition. A first-hand account of political and social conditions in Mexico following the Mexican War of Independence from Spain. The author was British Chargé d’Affaires there from 1825 to 1827. His account contains considerable detail respecting mining operations in the country. The handsome aquatints and lithographs are after drawings by Mrs. Ward.
