Taken from Chapter 2: Ancient Mayan culture Pyramids and palaces The Mayan civilization is famous for its elaborate buildings, which demanded great engineering skill. These buildings were not made of wood or stone; they were constructed from concrete, which is still an important building material used today. The Maya built pyramids that were sometimes 60 meters (200 feet) high! The pyramids were monuments to Mayan Gods and leaders. Unlike the pointed pyramids of the ancient Egyptians, Mayan temples had flat tops upon which the rulers sat. Mayan palaces were built differently than pyramids. They were not as tall, and they held many more rooms. The pyramids and palaces were often arranged around large courts or gardens, forming small cities. Some of these cities are still standing.
