About this title:

Synopsis: A plastic cap is placed carefully over a prim woman's hair. Three men wearing lab coats bend intensely over an equal number of women, examining their pupils. Two serious, smart women contemplate a white table. A man in a suit and tie smirks lightly while holding pairs of red spheres, perhaps cherries, between his fingers. A middle-aged schoolmarm sketches a windmill on the naked back of a small, brown-haired child. The figures in Micha'l Borremans's enigmatic paintings are for the moment preoccupied with a meticulous task. For how long, one wonders, have they been doing this, and for how long will they continue? The viewer, so accustomed by now to looking at everything quicker and quicker still, cannot help but look ever more deeply into these mesmerizing, puzzling oils. Borremans has caught his subjects in action, totally committed and concentrated, and they demand as much from the viewer. But no matter how close one looks, no real specificity is discernible in the depicted characters; notions of concrete time and place are dissolved in neutral tones of taupe and ochre. The vagueness of their middle-class restraint triggers a world of mildly ironic mystery, worthy of further contemplation.

About the Author: MichaIl Borremans was born in 1963 in Geraardsbergen, Belgium. Solo exhibitions of his work have been mounted at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Kunsthalle Bremehaven, and the Museum f r Gegenwartskunst in Basel, Switzerland, among others. Borremans lives and works in Ghent.

Book Description Hatje Cantz Verlag, Hatje Cantz Verlag, 2005. Hardcover. Condition: gut. 2005. Ausstellungen: S.M.A.K., Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Gent 5.2.-10.4.2005 Parasol Unit, London 3.5.-30.6.2005 The Royal Hibernian Academy, Gallagher Gallery, Dublin 14.7.-4.9.2005 If you are a lover of painting and art books, this first work on Belgian artist Michael Borremans is well worth adding to your collection. I think Borremans has something quite new to bring to the figurative tradition. His subtle, subdued, gorgeous works seem to come from the 1930s or 40s, yet they express the anxiety of our era. The book is small, just 9.75 x 6 inches, so the reproductions are small too. Most are well-presented, though the color on some looks iffy. Some works have been enlarged to cross the gutter, which can be frustrating. But this is still a painter worth getting to know, and thus the book is worth it. A decade from now you'll be glad that you have this first book on the artist on your shelf. Borremans's Zeichnungen/Tekeningen/Drawings is an excellent book, but it's harder to get and his drawings are quite different from the paintings. I recommend both books.
