Synopsis: Dust jacket notes: "The imaginary lands and bizarre creatures of science fiction and fantasy exist nowhere int eh real world. AUthors invent and readers dream, but only the most talented artists have the ability to givve substance to those visions in a way all can share. Michael Whelan has that special gift. He works from his imagination; there are no models for what he paints. BUt he has an uncanny knack for reaching into and beyond an author's words to find the perfect image to bring a dream alive. His stunning cover paintings have entranced readers everywhere, illustrating the visions of such popular authors as Isaac Asimov, Piers Anthony, Larry Niven, Robert Heinlein, Stephen R. Donaldson, Arthur C. Clarke, and Anne McCaffrey. The book is a one-man exhibition: a tribute to an artist's genius and a chance for readers to experience the full range and magic of Michael Whelan's brilliant artwork. It is also a rare opportunity to peek behind the scenes of the artist's craft, as Whelan reveals some of the secrets of his trade...." The book also includes Whelan illustrations for works by Edgar Rice Burroughs, H. P. Lovecraft, Alan Dean Foster, and more.
From Publishers Weekly:
This award-winning illustrator finds that the literature of science fiction and fantasy "gives the artist the greatest opportunity for creative expression in the field of illustration today." In this collection of Whelan's cover illustrations for some 50 booksnotably all published by Del ReyIsaac Asimov's robots, Edgar Rice Burroughs's martians, H. P. Lovecraft's skeletons, Anne McCaffrey's flying dragons and the Star Child of Arthur C. Clarke's 2010: Odyssey Two are rendered in brilliant hues and careful detail. Unfortunately, Whelan's descriptive talents do not extend to his writing, which is artless. Furthermore, since he assumes, apparently, that readers are intimately familiar with the books in question, his decision to give a white lizard six legs rather than eight in one cover painting and his explanation that red lilies represent the Earth Goddess, regeneration and immortality in another picture will be meaningful only to connoisseurs of the genre.
