About this title

The Spaniards consider Miguel Hernandez and Blas de Otero the greatest poets of Spain since [Federico Garcia] Lorca. Both mingle political suffering with the wildest of imaginative delicacy. - This volume is the second in a series of translation projects, originating with Robert Bly's Seventies Press, which Beacon is making available to a larger audience. Translations which first appeared in limited editions are included in this expanded bilingual volume, and Hernandez appears in English translation for the first time. In addition to the editors' introductions, the Beacon edition includes Pablo Neruda's conversations about Hernandez with Robert Bly, a letter from Lorca to Hernandez, and a recollection of a meeting with Otero by Antonio Nunez. This is a bilingual edition, with Spanish and English on facing pages. The translations are by Timothy Baland, Robert Bly, Hardie St. Martin, and James Wright.
