About this title

Mika Ninagawa's book is a compilation of vibrant, dark, sexual explosion of color and beauty. The Tokyo-born photographer is known for her fantastic (in the root-word meaning) images. Flowers, buildings, celebrities, fish, constructed tableaus-all become radiant, filled with personality told in saturated hues. Mika Ninagawa (1972) is one of Japan's most innovative photographers of this moment, and one of the most prolific. Since 1997 she has published more than 35 photo books. Besides television commercials she also directed a full-length feature film, "Sakuran", which was shown with great success at the Berlin Film Festival in 2007. This year a retrospective exhibition of her work travels past a number of Japanese museums. Read less Ninagawa mixes elements from 18th-century Japanese cultural traditions - goldfish, flowers, blossoms - with the bright colors of the neo-pop. In this way she creates powerful images in exuberant colors and seemingly absurd forms. By tying up her subjects tightly, form and color melt into overwhelming, colorful scenes. Ninagawa started her career in the mid-90s as an "onnanoko shashinka", which is best translated as "girl of photography". A term for the generation of female, 18- to 20-year-old photographers who use the point-and-shoot camera to document the personal life and that of their peers. In the meantime, Ninagawa is rather the second generation "onnanoko shashinka", because she is an exceptional talent, with a very mature approach to her subject. And yet with a fascinating mix of open-mindedness, pleasure and daring.
