About this title

Synopsis:

Over 25 years of research has gone into this history and evolution of international air forces and their badges from 1870-1982. This volume covers, with descriptive text and photos, the European countries of Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, East Germany, Great Britain, France and Hungary. While cleaning up our warehouse we came across about 200 copies of this long out-of-print title. For those interested in European Flying Badges this publication has been the 'bible' for years. We are sorry to inform you, however, that a second volume will not be published because of the death of the author. Perhaps one day someone will step forward to fill his shoes. 559 Photos and Illustrations

About the Author:

Don Chalif The author has, from early boyhood, always been interested in the exploits of Word War I military aviators. When hearing or reading accounts of high adventure of the early birdmen, dueling with adversaries in fragile, hazardous, wood and canvas machines, it represented to him a time of high courage. It was a time when the chivalry of the air existed in its finest modern form, and young and old alike were gripped by a fascination and admiration for those early pioneers of flight.
For the author, the mystic of youth carried into adulthood, and when bitten by the urge to collect something of that early era of flight, he chose to collect pilot and aircrew badges. When he began collecting, there was no information available on what had been authorized officially or worn unofficially. While the desire to collect was there, collecting required knowledge. Thus, he spent long years of intense correspondence with flyers, often retired and forgotten, studying yellowing documents and papers from private sources, as well as official and semi official reports from diverse governments, both near and far. All of this formed the final shape of this book which describes the history of the flyers badges with, it is hoped, some authority and knowledge.
After amassing one of the largest flying badge collections (public or private) anywhere, the Author decided to attempt obtaining the personal badges from top-scoring fighter pilot aces of the various countries beginning with World War I. Eventually he obtained signed photos of 170 leading aces from 21 different countries and authenticating letters stating that they had sent him their personal badge. They are all framed in a manner similar to the photo of the Air Vice Marshall Johnnie Johnson, the British Ace of Aces, which accompanies his foreword on page 6 of this volume.
This series of books is a result of years of personal involvement with the story of military aviation badges and those who wore them, not an item from a military supply shop drawer but a symbol of membership in the youngest arm of modern warfare. The author hopes that this book will aid all who open its pages, for whatever their purpose may be and bring to life once more the memories of the past, famous and brave men, notwithstanding their nationality, for the present generation as well as those for the future.
