A mint copy. An autobiographical work that had a tremendous impact on treatment of the mentally ill. Clifford Whittingham Beers, 1876-1943, founder of the mental hygiene movement in America, was born at New Haven and graduated from Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University in 1897. This work was first published in 1908 and comprises an account of his confinement in a mental institution during a period of three years in which he "suffered from tactlessness, deprivation and actual cruelty on the part of incompetent, amoral, and sadistic attendants and even members of medical staffs." It's publication was hailed by William James, and he soon had the support of the medical profession and others in the work to prevent and treat mental disorders. He was a leader in the field until his retirement in 1939. Bookseller Inventory # 10536
