Description:

Folio [xxxvi], xiv, [ii] , 331, [1] pp. Frontispiece portrait of William Pryce by Pinx and Basire, list of subscribers, plus 7 engraved plates (3 folding) and 2 folding tables. Modern brown calf; occasional browning in the inner margins. A fine presentation copy inscribed to John Bradley from Wm. Reynolds (whose name appears on the subscribers list), plus ownership signature of Thomas Addenbrook Bradley on the fly-leaf. First edition of this impressive work on mining in Cornwall. It is considered of great value for its historical and practical treatments of mining. The work is divided into six books and an appendix. Pryce treats the origin, formation, and substance of minerals and metals; the theory and natural history of strata, etc.; practical parts of mining, such as methods of discovering and working mines; the dressing of tin, copper and lead ores as well as gold and silver; assaying; and manufacturing tin and copper into their respective metals. Of particular interest is Pryce's discussion of Watt's steam fire engine, one of the most important discoveries made, and its consequence to the mining of Great Britain. Pryce (1725-90) was a physician and practiced surgery and apothecary. His interest in mining grew from his ownership of copper and tin mines in Cornwall. Bookseller Inventory #
