Two volumes, 16mo, bound in full contemporary marbled calf, with gilt-tooled spines and green leather spine labels. Engraved frontispiece in each volume. Pp. (8), 120; (x), 196. Joints rubbed and starting; extremities lightly worn. Bookplate of Edward L. Baker. Ex libris inscription by Augustin Daly (1838-1899), the noted American playwright and theatrical manager. Internal contents very clean and tight. James Beattie (1735-1803) was a professor of moral philosophy at Marischal College in Aberdeen. As a poet he is remembered chiefly for 'The Minstrel,' a poem in Spenserian stanzas, tracing the development of a poet's mind under the influence of nature. To his generation it was an inspiration and had an influence on Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Lord Byron. Bookseller Inventory # 299
