First edition, first printing (not stated), collection of articles on the Portuguese language and Portuguese-based pidgins and creoles in Africa, written in English, French, and Portuguese; from the library of the linguist Glenn Gilbert with Gilbert's inscription on the ffep, sent to him from Portugal by the publisher at the request of Marius Valkhoff; slight shelfwear, corners bumped, crown and heel of spine rubbed, else new and unread, rated Near Fine; would be of interest to collectors of books on creolistics and especially books dealing with Portuguese-based pidgins and creoles in Africa; one of the contributions is the famous study by Ferraz and Valkhoff comparing the Portuguese creoles of São Tomé and Cabo Verde; also of interest for collectors of books by Valkhoff, the pioneering, maverick Belgian expatriot linguist in South Africa who wrote extensively in Dutch, French, Portuguese, and English, proposing for example that Afrikaans developed out of a creolized Dutch, rather than being of purely European origin; soft covers are black with white and red lettering on the front and spine, a reproduction of a 16th century Benin ivory, cavaleiros portugueses, on the front; 8vo - 9 3/8 inches tall, 319 numbered pages.
