Book Description Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from The Miscellaneous Works of Oliver Goldsmith, M. B, Vol. 1 of 4: A New Edition in Four Volumes to Which Is Prefixed Some Account of His Life and Writings The life of a man of letters is seldom strongly marked by vicissitude. It is thought, not action, that calls him into notice; and, unlike the soldier or the politician, who bustle on to fame, if he acquires celebrity, he acquires it in retirement, in converse only with books, and amidst the dust and solitude of a library. From a life thus private and inactive, few materials can be obtained to amuse the common readers of biography; but the magic of an author s works often lend a charm to his memoirs, superior to the vulgar interest excited by adventure. We love to talk of those who have given us pleasure, not that we have any thing important to say, but because the subject is pleasing. Such considerations, however, need hardly be offered as an apology on the present occasion. The life of Goldsmith will be found to have been little analogous to the lives of most literary men; the events in it were chequered and striking; it abounds with incidents of many-coloured variety; and readers of every description may find in his memoirs both instruction and amusement.
