About this Item

This one is a first-ballot shoo-in for the Fraudulent Memoirs Hall of Shame, right up there with James Frey's "A Million Little Pieces," the writings of so-called "JT LeRoy," and Michael Pelligrino's "The Honored Society." Here Misha claims to have been a Jewish refugee from the Nazis during WWII who walked across Europe, nearly froze to death, was befriended by wolves, etc. Great story, optioned by Disney, translated into more than a dozen languages, made into a movie by the gullible French. But, unfortunately for many concerned (publisher, ghostwriter, Disney, readers), totally bogus. As in: she's not Jewish and she spent the war in school in Brussels, where her father may have collaborated with the Nazis. It is possible she's seen wolves, in a zoo. Oh, and check out the blurb on the back panel, with the yellow "An Instant Classic" sticker (here peeled and torn) totally covering it, because blurber Betty Greene had second thoughts about the plausibility of the tale. Laid in is a Boston Globe story on the fraud, the lawsuits, etc; or just check out the book's Wikipedia page. No printing/edition info. Inscribed, signed, and dated by the disgraced author on the front endpaper: "To G-- family with love / Misha / July 31, 97." The book is square and unmarked; corners sharp, spine ends lightly bumped. The dust jacket is not price-clipped (original price $24.95); edgewear at spine ends and corners; an "Autographed Copy" sticker on the front panel; Brodart protected. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.
