About this Item

Subtitle continues - "Corn-Meal, Pies, Rice, Etc.". The covers are well attached with the front cover having some shakiness. The backstrip lacks the top 3/4 inch, which includes the lettering "Miss". The rest of the backstrip is mostly complete, with the loss of a few letters due to some cracking in the lower part. The bottom 1/2 inch is hanging loose, with the balance of the backstrip detached on one side. The gilt lettering is still fairly bright, and a good binder should be able to incorporate this original backstrip in a new spine. The gilt lettering on the cover is still bright. The upper right corner of the front cover is bent with the loss of some of the cloth at the edge. Pages: 2 frontpapers, Title page, copyright page, 2 pages of Preface, Contents (1), Weights and Measures (1), Main text = pages 7 - 510, Index = pages 511 - 520, 8 pages publisher's advertising, 2 endpapers. The pages are very clean, are still crisp, and are tightly bound. The pages are still white and are still supple, with no foxing, and no cracking of the paper. Miss Leslie writes in the Preface - "A large number of them (recipes) have been obtained from the South, and from ladies noted for their skill in housewifery. Many were dictated by colored cooks, of high reputation in the art, for which nature seems to have gifted that race with a peculiar capability. Some very fine receipts in this collection are of French origin: their title being translated into our own language. A large number are designed for elegant tables.". Bookseller Inventory # 13157
