Roman Catholic Church Missale Romanum

Used Hardcover Quantity Available: 1

Book Description P. J. Hanicq, Mechliniae [Mechelen, Flanders, Belgium], 1848. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good-. An impressive folio volume, (13" x 10" = 33 x 15.5 mm.). Full green morocco leather, with a decorative device of a cross at the center of each board, within an elaborate border of floral tools and rules, spine with five shallow raised bands, similar gilt work; all edges gilt, pale yellow endpapers. Minor rubbing, with some repairs to minor tears at the spine ends. There is a note of provenance in pencil on the front blank leaf: "From Father John Calvert Brown, S. J. / Church of St. Francis Xavier fl. 1750 (?) / Compton, Md. / June 1958." This is a fairly well preserved copy of the largest of the several Missals for the Tridentine Mass -- printed in Mechelin by the firm of P. J. Hanicq -- printed in black and red throughout, in large, clear type, with musical notation on many leaves - (square notes on four red staves). There are several full page plates in splendid stone lithography. Near the end of our volume, is an index to the contents of the appendices, and on the verso of the final page (clxxi) there is an advertisement in French from the firm of Hanicq which helps demonstrate the various sizes and formats of the firm's many liturgical texts. This is the biggest and most deluxe production -- the large folio version of of Missale Romanum. The French text does suggest that these illustrations were newly made -- ("illustree de magnifiques nouvelles planches") This ad also clarifies that the plates issued with the firm's 1846 folio Missale Romanum were the same as those which had been published with the Hanicq edition of 1835 [those earlier plates had been engravings, rather than stone lithographs, as our edition contains]. Following this page of advertisements, our copy contains a specific American text. with its own title page in red and black: "Missæ Propriæ pro Fœderatorum Provinciis Americæ Septentrionalis" Mechliniae: P. J. Hanicq., 1848. 4 pp. Folowing this are three separate leaves, with slightly variations in size and text -- all adding the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the BVM (* December) -- in line with Pope Pius IX's definition of the Immaculate Conception as a Roman Catholic dogma in 1854; before that date, this missal (and its predecessors) referred to it as the Feast of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The final version of this additional leaf has a printer's slug at the bottom of the verso: "Baltimore [Maryland]: Printed and Published by John Murphy & Co., 182 Baltimore Street -- 1864." This was a copy used at the altar in liturgy, with traces of tabs mounted to the fore edges of several leaves. Also, it was kept up to date, at least until the revisions to the Missal ordered by Pope Leo XIII in 1884. Several leaves have been either bound in this copy, or loosely inserted. Two of the most interesting confirm that this was a copy used by Jesuits; both relate to the Jesuit martyrs in Japan. The first is impressively printed in red and black: Miaae in Festis B.B. Martyrum Japonensium Societatis Jesu. 4 pp. with imprint at the bottom of the final page: "Ratisbonae, 1868. Ex officina Friderici Pustet." (these two leaves have more foxing and toning than the other leaves printed by Hanicq in Mechelen). The second is a single leaf, printed recto and verso: "Die V. Februarii in Festo SS. Martyrum Japonensium Pauli Michi, Joannis De Goio et Jacobi Chisai." [These three men were the Jesuits included in the reknowned "Twenty-six Martyrs of Japan" -- executed by crucifixion in Nagasaki on the orders of Hideyoshi Toyotomi on February 5, 1597. Paulo Miki ha become the most famous of this unfortunate group, partly because he was not a foreign missionary, but was born into a wealthy Japanese family. He was educated by the Jesuits in Azuchi and Takatsuki, and became a well known and successful preacher after joining the the Society of Jesus. Miki and the others were jailed and then forced to march about 600 miles from Kyoto to Nagasaki; they are reported to have been singing the Te Deum over this entire ordeal.
