Book Description London: , Elek Books, 1961. Hardcover. Double-page line map, with Anglican Christian training centres: Bungaria Lolowai Maravovo Pamtia Pawa Siota Torgil Tugawi Vureas `.the fundamental principle on which Melanesian society is based is one of kinship, with the emphasis on mother-right. It is the mother who conceives the child, nurtures it in her body and brings it into the world in the culmination of a pregnancy for which the husband is not held to be responsible. According to the Melanesians, the baby is brought to the mother at night-time by spirits. The father has made no physical contribution whatsoever. Knowing nothing of ordinary physiological functions and hardly anything about sexual anatomy, the islanders believe that sexual passion originates in the eyes, flows thence into the rest of the body and concen- trates in the kidneys before manifesting itself in the male and female organs. Men and women cohabit together, but pregnancy is not regarded as the logical consequence of the sex act. It is this denial of paternity that makes it well-nigh impossible for our missionaries to preach the gospel of the Holy Trinity.' (p. 91) -- `On the islands sex flourishes best under a full moon. The young people love to sit together round a blazing wood fire, chewing betel nut and smoking. Very likely they will squat face to face and begin their love-play by searching each other's head for lice (which they eat!). Then the youth will tell the maiden frankly that he wants to copulate and so they will wander off to seek privacy and concealment beyond the ring of firelight. They do not kiss in our sense of the word, but their preliminary love-making includes a certain measure of caressing, teasing, scratching and--strange to relate--biting of eyelashes.'
