About this Item

Hardcover in black cloth. LENGTHY INSCRIPTION ONTHE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER: " To David E. Lilienthal/ a great builder as well as a dreamer--who is contributing magnificently to solidifying & in addressing our form of government--the last best hope of earth. With the admiration and regards of / Joseph E. Davies". 659 pp. with index. Near fine. No jacket. Joseph Davies began his government career under Woodrow Wilson and was appointed the second U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union in 1936 by Franklin Roosevelt. The critical part of his work in this role was to assess the military might of the USSR and to determine whose side Russia would be on in the coming war; his reports to FDR were highly valuable and even handed, avoiding ideological traps. This book was the result of that work and was a worldwide bestseller when it was published in 1941. It became the basis for the 1943 Warner Brothers movie starring Walter Huston and Ann Harding. David Lilienthal was an important government official whose two main accomlishments were leading the Tennessee Valley Authority and later the Atomic Energy Commission. Bookseller Inventory # GE14100
