About this Item

Travels in 1841 to 1851 in S. Africa & his first major expedition across Africa where in 1855 he discovered Victoria Falls. It necessitated a remaking of the map of Central Africa. He also discovered the tsetse fly and the disease it caused in cattle. Fold-out map of Livingstone's route across Africa constructed from his astronomical observations, bearings, estimated distances, sketches, etc. by J. Arrowsmith 1857. "The map denotes the amount of oral geographical information which Livinstone collected from intelligent natives with whom he conversed during his travels across Africa." One tear. Also a journey from the Cape of Good Hope to Loanda on the West Coast, thence across the continent, down the river Zambesi, to the eastern ocean. Frontis of Livingstone, drawing of tsetse on title page. Half leather, banded spine, marbled boards, covers disbound, pieces of spine missing from top and bottom, heavy edge wear, owner name dated 1859. A good subject for rebinding.
