About this Item

With other Contemporary Documents. Translated and Annotated by Eleanor B. Adams & Fray Angelico Chavez. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press (1956). Quarto, hardcover, cloth, in a dust wrapper. 387 pages, indexed and illustrated. A few small closed tears and some chipping to dust wrapper, two of which are repaired with tape (nearly invisible). Bookplate of noted Southwestern archaeologist Watson Smith. Overall, a mint copy in a very good dust wrapper. An important record, embellished with architectural drawings, historical notes, brief biographies of Franciscans and Settlers, Glossary, and translations of related contemporary documents and letters. Dominguez was Commissary Visitor to the Franciscan Missions of New Mexico. He departed El Paso on March 1, 1776, and spent the next fourteen months in travel and inquiry, recording his observations in his official report and private letters to his superior. He also led a four-month expedition to Utah with Fray Silvestre Velez de Escalante. He incurred so much enmity with his forthright recommendations, that he ended up spending the rest of his life in obscure frontier posts. Bookseller Inventory # 6559
