About this Item

The Affair of the Diamond Necklace was an elaborate confidence game involving the countess de la Motte and her husband, the Parisian jewelry firm of Boehmer and Bassenge, Cardinal Rohan, possibly Marie Antoinette, and a diamond necklace valued at 1,600,000 livres. The conspirators' scheme to secure the necklace under the guise of Marie Antoinette's acquiring it through intermediaries began in the summer of 1784, and came to fruition in January of the next year. Arrests were made and an absolutely sensational trial was held in which the cardinal was acquitted, the countess was "condemned to be whipped, branded and shut up in the Salpetri?re," and her husband, who had fled to England with the necklace, "was condemned . . . to the galleys for life" (Encyclop?dia Britannica). The Baron de Fages-Chaulnes was a member of the king's brother's company of guards and, through his proposed marriage, became embroiled with Cardinal Rohan and the jewelers Vaucher and Loque. While apparently innocent of any involvement in the diamond necklace nonsense, he was swept up in the turbulence it caused and was forced to defend himself against charges of being a co-conspirator of the cardinal's. 4to (25.8 cm, 10.2"). 30 pp. See: Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th ed., VIII, 164?65 for a succinct account of the affair. Modern quarter blue cloth with French-swirl marbled paper sides; blue leather gilt label on front cover. Some noticeable staining, usually light. Bookseller Inventory # 4103
