About this Item

4to. The first volume is 26 by 16.5 cm, the second volume, 28 by 19.5 cm. 214 and 153 hand-colored plates, respectively, for a total of 367 such plates. Notwithstanding the difference in size, the two volumes are bound in a matching half vellum and marbled boards, and they read as a set. The difference in size is NOT because the plates were cut differently, but rather, a reflection of a change in the size of the original printing. The plates were staples of fashion magazines such as Bon Ton, but it is also believed that often such plates were available individually and those that went into these two volumes were a compilation of plates sold singly, as there would be markings in the margins of some if they had been pulled from bound volumes. The plates are mostly of women's fashion, with a smattering of men's, and the collection here facilitates greatly our observance of the then slow but steady evolution of fashion over an eight year period. Number of plate neatly inked in corner of each plate. Scattered light foxing. Soiling to the vellum and wear to the boards. Bookseller Inventory # 002996

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
