About this title

Synopsis:

Recounts the life and struggles of the young Indian lawyer who became the leader of the movement for the independence of India through the use of nonviolence.

From Booklist:

Gr. 8-12. Part of the Overcoming Adversity series, this solid biography of Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi focuses on his groundbreaking work as a pacifist and peacemaker, and how injustice inspired him to take up this cause. The book begins with Gandhi's assassination, and then moves back in time to Gandhi's childhood and proceeds chronologically through his school days in England, his years as a lawyer-activist in South Africa, and his return to India, where he revolutionized the society as it broke away from Great Britain. There isn't a lot about Gandhi's personal life, and the book is overwhelmingly positive. However, the last chapter, which puts Gandhi's philosophy into context, does a good job of explaining the opposition to some of his ideas as well as how other notable twentieth-century figures adapted them and put them to use. The many black-and-white photos are well chosen. A chronology, a bibliography, and a list of Web sites are appended. Ilene Cooper
