About this title

Medusa aimed her poisoned arrow right at Lillian ...

Lillian always loved stories about myths and monsters--until she found herself inside one, fighting for her life!

Joined by her best friends, Katy and Maisy, Lillian must cross a sea guarded by Krakens and sirens, race through a dark forest haunted by elves and chimeras, and cross mountains ruled by griffins and rocs.

Where in this world is Lillian's sister? Who is the mysterious boy with the stone medallion? Why do the monsters hold an ancient grudge against humanity? And what is the secret hiding at the heart of it all?

From the Author:

I love fantasy, and always wanted to write a fantasy novel. When I was nine, I signed up for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). I wrote 1,000 words a day for the entire month. It was hard, especially because I was learning to type at the same time, but I did it. On November 30th I had my first draft.

And it was terrible! I'm not kidding.

But I wasn't discouraged. In fact, my family and I celebrated. I had a first draft!

Later, when I went back to work on my second draft, I started by reading the book, chapter by chapter. I felt that my first draft was silly and didn't really make much sense. So I hit Command A on the keyboard (Select All) and pressed Delete. Then I started again, and it was much better. My second draft took about six months.

My third draft was also my fourth and maybe fifth draft because I rewrote so many chapters over and over. I wanted my book to be as good as I could write it. In my opinion, rewriting is the hardest part.

When I was done with my last draft, it turned out that it wasn't my last draft. The story had taken on a life of its own, and the ending was different than I had planned. I had to go back and fix parts of the beginning and middle sections to fit the new ending.

It took about a year and a half to finish my novel. I started when I was nine and finished when I was ten, eleven days before my eleventh birthday.

This is only the first part of a long story. I hope to write more soon.

A Special Thanks to Ray Harryhausen: I have been inspired by him since I was seven, when I first saw Clash of the Titans. Unlike many of the computerized monsters you see today, Ray's creatures have a lot of personality. You feel for them. His monsters seemed more like a dream, so they weren't too scary. If I hadn't seen Ray's movies, I might not have been inspired to write this story. Ray died on May 7, 2013. I wish I could have met him and given him a copy of my book.
